Today’s workplace thrives on innovation, empowerment, and an open dialogue. But what happens when social discord and discussion seep into the workplace, bringing with it polarizing views and sometimes intolerance? How are these trends affecting the workplace and how are organizations responding to this atmosphere?

Bettina Deynes, Vice President of Human Resources for the Society of Human Resource Management, joined Business Forward for a conference call. She spoke about how business leaders can ensure that their workplace enhances employee engagement and how they may capitalize on each employees’ unique differences and experiences.

While attacks on Muslims have increased nearly 20% in the last year, 2/3 Americans believe that immigrants strengthen our country. This increase in polarization is being driven by older Americans. Younger Americans tend to agree with each other on these polarizing issues.

Deynes talked about the importance of shifting focus away from diversity and moving towards inclusion. It is no longer about what makes us different, but instead what brings us together. It is important to find unity without exclusion. As Deynes put it, “diversity is being invited to the party and inclusion is being asked to dance.”

Companies are addressing this trend by increasing communication and having clear, common strategies for developing diversity and strategic plans on inclusion. In modern times it is becoming increasingly easier for Americans to avoid people with whom they disagree, so communication is key to raising awareness about understanding the value of bringing people together from different backgrounds.
